From Tagging to Asking: What the Iconik + TwelveLabs Partnership Unlocks

John Reigart III
TwelveLabs names Iconik by Backlight its first Premier Tier Ecosystem Partner. The two companies are building native semantic search directly into Iconik's core search interface: ask in plain language for a play, a speaker, or a moment of silence, and get back an exact clip with a timecode. Early access is open now.

Editors don't lose time because footage doesn't exist. They lose time because nobody tagged it, and the person who remembers what’s inside is in a different meeting. Iconik and TwelveLabs have been solving that challenge together for a while now. Today, we're formalizing it.
We're naming Iconik by Backlight as TwelveLabs' first Premier Tier Ecosystem Partner, a designation we've built for the partners who've done more than integrate our technology; they’ve built a real go-to-market motion around it, and a joint roadmap to keep delivering value to our customers.
The Search Problem
Iconik's Adaptive Media Management platform sits on top of a customer's existing storage (cloud, on-prem, or hybrid), giving creative and media operations teams one place to find, review, and publish assets. TwelveLabs' video understanding models solve a narrower but harder problem inside that same workflow: reading through hours of unlabeled footage and answering plain-language questions about what's actually happening in it, whether that’s a sports play, a product placement, a specific speaker, or a moment of silence.
Put together, teams stop tagging manually and start asking questions directly. "Find every clip where the quarterback is under pressure" becomes a search query instead of a multi-day scrub through raw footage. The result comes back as an exact clip, with a timecode, inside the tool editors already use.
Native Search is Coming to Iconik
Iconik customers have had access to TwelveLabs-powered semantic search for a while now, through custom actions and browser-based tooling layered on top of the existing Iconik interface. It's worked well enough to prove the demand: real usage, real production libraries, and a clear signal that customers want this built deeper into the product, not bolted on top of it.
The two teams have spent the past several months designing a unified search architecture that brings TwelveLabs' semantic understanding directly into Iconik's core search interface, combined with Iconik's existing lexical and metadata search in a single query. No separate plugin, no context switch. Search just gets smarter.
Under the hood, the integration is built on AWS infrastructure patterns that keep customer content inside their own environment. That's a deliberate choice, since so many Iconik customers already run bring-your-own-storage deployments and have no intention of moving their archives to stand up a new search experience.
Why Iconik, Why Now
TwelveLabs and Iconik shared a customer base before they shared a product: media and entertainment, sports, and enterprise marketing organizations sitting on large, growing, chronically under-indexed video libraries. Iconik's federated storage model means those customers can adopt semantic search without a migration project standing between them and the value.
That combination of willingness to invest in better search, plus infrastructure that's already built for it, is rarer than it sounds. Premier Tier reflects how deeply the two go-to-market teams already work together, not just how well the products connect. That's the difference between a partnership that ships an integration once and one that keeps building.

We'll be showing the native connector at IBC, September 11 to 14. Find us at Hall 5, Booth 5.D82, and Iconik at Hall 1, Booth 1.D09 – where TwelveLabs will be live in the Partner Pod on Sunday, September 13, from 10am to noon.
If you're evaluating video infrastructure and archive search as separate problems, this is the case for treating them as one: the platform managing your media and the model understanding it should be talking to each other by default, not through a workaround.
If you're already on Iconik, the current search integration is available today, and the native connector is in early access. Reach out to your Iconik account manager to get on the list, or contact our sales team.
